Looking forward and reflecting back...

Now is the time of year that most are winding down beside those drowning in the anaerobic bath of cyclocross.  Which I'm personally sad I decided not to throw down in this year.  But I'm having fun winding down, doing some running with  my fiance as she preps for the Boston marathon after qualifying in her 1st marathon attempt in Vegas last December....awesome huh!  Which also running the last 11mile or so with her gave me the desire to do a full marathon at some point.  2012 may be the year....it's out there so someone may have to hold me to it now!

But while we wind down and the days are now short, it's a good time to take a look forward and paint the path for where you will go in 2012.  By this I mean, what events (both athletic and life) do you have looming in the future.  For me the biggest and most important is my wedding in February and our honeymoon soon-after in March.  After that 1st and foremost, I'd like to expand on my experience as a coach by checking off a few more NEW events that I haven't toed the line for to gain that 1st hand experience to better tackle my job as an endurance coach that is finding a great niche of ultra mtb athletes mixed with some road/cross specialists and great fitness enthusiasts.

So last year I posted a laundry list of great Ultra events, but this year I'm going to change it up hopefully so I have more time at home with Heather and still enjoy some fresh ripping.  Here's last years calendar with those in bold that competed in with some notes.

Series
Rocky Mtn Ultra Series *only 1 of series w/ a great race at VooDoo Fire until 5 flats took me from 1st to barely top 15
US Ultra 100 series *only 1 of series but 1st at Breck 68 besting time of last year by 25min!
Winter Park  *unfortunately too busy and missed every weekend!
Mtn States Cup  *Did home race at Cheyenne SP on 5in bike finishing 11th in pretty stacked field
Sand Creek Sports  *Nice local series where most fun was 2nd place to Finsty in 50miler in Palmer Park.

One day races
Whiskey 50 *just out of top 10 in Fat tire crit and solid ending in full 50. Always fun!
12 Hrs of Mesa Verde *another podium in 3rd with awesome teammate Chris Jenkins.
Gunnison Growler *Phenomenal ride until I cracked to Kalan's hard charge in last 5mi.
Bailey HUNDO *same place...same time as 2010 and felt awful entire day!
Firecracker 50 *great ride to 13th in 4:21 but still on my best of 4:12
Leadville Silver Rush 50  *no go due to racing and winning Breck 68 on same day!
Laramie Enduro *rode possessed back to 5th after flatting in exact spot as 2010!
Leadville 100 *only felt great from mile 80 to finish, but I'll take 7:23 time and 32nd place.
Park City Pt to Pt *missed lottery sign in while at CTS camp
Dakota Five-O *no go....much needed home time.
24 Hr Natl Championships in CO Springs *Became a National Champion  enough said!
Palo Duro MTB Marathon * Yet to come....but reg'd and rolling next weekend!

I did add in some extra fun this year as I joined up with Team Scion.  That led to a fun race trip...aka vacation to Mallorca, Spain where we competed in the Semana International Masters Stage Race.  I had a great race tying for 5th in the GC with about 6 other guys by making the breaks in the super aggro circuits and making the selection on the single big climbing day going over the top in 5th place and finishing the day 2nd in the field sprint.

So for 2012, I think I want to do some of the events that aren't bolded above and then add in some new things like a mtb stage race.  Here is a list to get going....

Running marathon
Nashville RnR April 28th
MTB Stage Race
Breck Epic Aug 12-17th
La Ruta Nov
BC Bike Race June 30-July 7th
Others
A few local road races and crits
Hit up the WP series for some shorter XC racing.
Do another version of the NUE series.
Do some more winter ski/board trips!

What are you aiming for?  Better start thinking!
