New roles, new goals.....

As most of you have read, I have started my new position with USA Cycling as the Collegiate Cycling Manager. This is a huge step for me within the world of cycling, but it also creates a huge challenge. Most people that I have spoken to in the cycling industry laugh about USAC owning me and that now my own cycling life will go downhill. I am taking this opportunity to make the statement that the job will not only not have negative effects on my own personal performance as a cyclist, but my fitness and racing will improve. My goal is to be the guy they announce over the loudspeakers as the representative for Collegiate Cycling from USAC that still manages to train and finish as a competitive elite athlete.

In the past, it was never even a goal to become a pro, but when it happened I couldn't have been more excited. Since then I've struggled with the should and shouldn't do's of mainstream American lifestyle. The "you need to quit playing's," or the push to be settled, have a good job. Not that I can't have some of these things, but I plan to enjoy and really put some effort into using the motivation that has taken me to where I am now.

And I must mention, the UCI cross races I did this weekend in Boulder.....HARD! I didn't have the drive to push after the realization that without a ranked call-up, it is nearly impossible to stay competitive. So, I must get in national quality fitness, compete to develop a ranking for myself, and then represent to the fullest.

Check back for some pics from the cross weekend when I get them downloaded from the digital!

And hold me to this goal if you see me around!

Daniel:
It was nice meeting you this weekend at our coach's conference. I think you have one of those rare opportunities at USAC to invent your own career, if they will allow you enough free rein to do so. It would be presumptuous for us in the League to think that WE have all the answers, but our growth rate is pretty strong evidence that we are getting things mostly right for where we live. I hope you caught a little more of our vision, and are encouraged by what you saw and heard. Best wishes. Coach Mark
